Gunlake proposed extending quarry operations to meet growing NSW infrastructure demand - up to 4.2 million tonnes of quarry products transported annually, 24-hour operations Monday to Saturday, and a 30-year operational lifespan. Assessment needed to satisfy NSW DPIE requirements while addressing community concerns about traffic noise, road safety along the Primary Transport Route, and long-term impact on the surrounding regional community.
Conducted the Social Impact Assessment in accordance with NSW DPIE guidelines. Defined the social area of influence across local and regional areas, identified and evaluated potential social impacts and benefits, and developed tailored mitigation strategies to address identified social risks.
Community engagement, primary and secondary data, and evidence-based impact prediction. Distinguished local impacts from regional benefits, integrated technical inputs on noise and traffic, and developed a mitigation approach that included Gunlake advocating for a speed limit reduction from 100 km/h to 80 km/h along the Primary Transport Route to address public safety concerns.
The SIA concluded the project would provide significant social and economic benefits to local and regional communities, with robust mitigation strategies to manage potential negative impacts. Identified opportunities for community investment and local economic growth, supporting sustainable development in the region.
