How to Use Triangulation for More Reliable and Inclusive SIAs

Proficiency in Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is vital for social impact professionals in today's landscape of social development and environmental sustainability. A well-executed SIA does more than meet compliance - it ensures community voices are meaningfully heard, impacts are accurately identified, and mitigation strategies are both practical and measurable.

One essential technique to improve your SIA is triangulation of data. This method - combining multiple data sources and collection methods - produces more credible, holistic insights. Why Is Triangulation Important?

Triangulation involves using different data sources, methods, or perspectives to examine social impacts. It helps:

  • Cross-check data for greater confidence in findings

  • Strengthen mitigation strategies through well-rounded insights

How to Apply Triangulation in Your SIA

Step 1: Combine Diverse Data Sources

Use a mix of primary data (collected directly from stakeholders) and secondary data (pre-existing datasets).

Primary: focus groups and interviews, community workshops, surveys, site visits and field observations.

Secondary: ABS Census data, government reports on health, planning, and infrastructure, academic and grey literature, technical reports (e.g. noise, air quality).

In a wind farm assessment in NSW's Southern Tablelands, we combined community interviews, stakeholder surveys, and regional health and employment data. This triangulated approach validated concerns and informed a more responsive impact plan.

Step 2: Use Mixed Methods

Blend qualitative and quantitative approaches to gain richer insights. Qualitative data uncovers values, perceptions, and community narratives; quantitative data measures trends like income, health outcomes, and service access.

Step 3: Build a Triangulation Matrix

A simple matrix maps insights from multiple sources for each impact area - community feedback, technical data, secondary data, observations. It visualises alignment or gaps, supporting stronger impact analysis and mitigation plans.

Common Challenges

  • Limited access to secondary data → use credible, public datasets
  • Bias in self-reported information → cross-check with third-party data
  • Conflicting sources → acknowledge differences and explain rationale
  • Time/resource constraints → prioritise high-impact areas for triangulation

Always document assumptions and limitations transparently - this builds credibility with regulators and communities alike.

When communities see their voices reflected alongside independent evidence, they're more likely to support the project and its outcomes.
